Care Fees Planning

A typical person that would come to me for care fees planning would be the son or daughter, maybe with a power of attorney for their mum or dad, or maybe a niece or nephew, someone with responsibility to look after the care and put some arrangements in place.

Or maybe it’s the solicitor, acting as attorney or with a deputyship to manage for their client.

I guess the biggest concern is the cost of care. Everybody is very aware that care is really expensive.

Sometimes people have the feeling that the Local Authority will pick up the tab if you run out of money. But that’s not always the case.

It really depends on the circumstances.

Later Life Planning

I’m asked a lot about later life and what it means.

After you’ve enjoyed your retirement for a certain number of years, you’ve done lots of the fun things you wanted, and enjoyed your hobbies you really wanted to participate in, the next stage is later life.

To me, it’s really from the age of 70. It’s when you really need to start thinking about what later life means for you; do you want to leave a legacy to your loved ones?

Unfortunately, an awful lot of family disputes happen on death, and it’s generally related to money, with a lack of clarity prompting many disputes. It would be so nice if people planned for that a little bit more.

If more families were aware, these misunderstandings would not be as frequent as they currently are.

Retirement Planning

Because retirement nowadays is actually quite a long time.

We’re easily thinking retirement of 35 plus years. So the money has to last quite a long time.

And a lot can happen in those years too.

I see it a lot with the later life clients were circumstances can change overnight.

You have to be prepared that that’s life and as we live longer, it’s great that we’re living longer, but we will have more complex needs if we suddenly have issues with our health.

So it’s just trying to make sure that whatever plan you put in place for your retirement, that financially that’s sustainable and it can meet those demands or meet those changes in the journey.

A financial plan is really supportive for people making those retirement choices because it looks at the whole big picture of what somebody would like to achieve.
